ROOSTERS

Our roosters are very gentle to handle and are not too rough on our hens.   We always choose roosters who are not aggressive towards humans or other animals on the farm.

To the left are pictures of the roosters that sired our hens.  The brown one is a Welsummer and the other is a Black Penedesenca.

When raised for meat, our young roosters dress out at about four pounds.  They are very, very lean and the meat is tender and tasty.  Quite a delicacy.

I was hesitant to choose a Penedesenca rooster for breeding but after I watched them mature they did look meaty enough to use to cross on my stock.  Supposedly Black Penedesencas are considered meat birds in their native country.

I like roosters that don't attack me and hens that aren't real flighty.  My current flock is near perfect in that regard.  The Penedesenca and Welsummer blood has made them slightly more active but not extremely flighty.
